What actually gets you to the first call
Recruiters screen resumes in under 15 seconds. For SWE roles, the first filter is almost always keyword match on the specific stack the team uses. Before you apply anywhere, open the JD, list the top 6 technical keywords (React, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, etc.), and verify your resume uses those exact words — not synonyms, not abbreviations. Incognito's match score weights required keywords 2x; anything under 60% match is usually a keyword gap, not an experience gap.
The work-sample that wins
If you have a public GitHub with 2-3 non-trivial personal projects, link them prominently. Not tutorial repos — actual projects with READMEs, commits spaced across weeks, and a small scope but finished surface. "I built X for Y, here's what I'd do next" lands better than "I know Go and Python." Reviewers read one project; make that one count.
System design at different levels
Junior: expect algorithms + one scoped API design. Mid: full service design with read/write path, monitoring, caching. Senior: multi-service, data consistency, tradeoffs, cost. Staff+: org design and how the system evolves over 2 years. Tune your prep to the level posted, not the level you want.
What to negotiate beyond base
Base salary is often constrained by the level band. What's negotiable without band pressure: signing bonus, equity refresh schedule, remote-work flexibility, first-year performance cycle, start date, vacation accrual. Ask for 2-3, expect to get 1. Levels.fyi + Glassdoor tell you the band; the offer call is where you learn the room.
Target list sizing
A 6-week SWE search with 3 apps/week = 18 apps → ~4-6 first-round → ~2-3 onsites → 1-2 offers. If you're getting 0 first-rounds at 18 apps, the problem is resume/keyword fit, not effort. If you're getting onsites but no offers, the problem is interview performance — double down on mock interviews.
